Reflexology

What is Reflexology

Reflexology is based on the principle that reflexes, or areas in the feet, hands and other parts of the body relate to the internal organs and other structures of the body. Although it works on a similar principle to acupuncture, reflexology is entirely non-invasive.

Instead of using needles, simple pressure is applied through the fingers to the minute reflex points in and around the hands or feet, this in turn has a stimulating effect on the specific parts of the body. The aim of Reflexology is to correct the three negative factors involved in the disease process: congestion, inflammation and tension.

What to expect from Reflexology

On the first visit, the reflexologist will chat with you about your general health and lifestyle. Reflexology is not a foot massage. The reflexologist may massage your feet a little to relax you before they start, but the technique itself is about applying firm pressure to specific points on the foot.

The reflexologist will also look for slight discolouration in specific areas, the natural creases of the foot may indicate an inbalance to a certain part of the body and the condition of the skin i.e puffy/taut/limp will help the reflexologist gather information about your general health.  Some feedback is required for the reflexologist to assess the patients' condition, but generally this would happen during the first couple of sessions.

Occasionally the patient may have a healing crisis although in general this is usually after their first session only.  This may consist of either having a slight headache or feeling a little nausea after treatment.  Some patients once they have noticed improvement will go on to have regualr monthly sessions as a general upkeep of good health.
